With visit to Villa Tugendhat in Brno / Z wizytą w Willi Tugendhatów

Ahoy!

We came back to our blog after a long break to describe to you our trip to the mysterious Villa. Villa Tugendhat is a historical building in the wealthy neighbourhood of Černá Pole in Brno (Czech Republic). Was designed by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Built of reinforced concrete between 1928 and 1930 for Fritz Tugendhat and his wife Greta, the villa soon became an icon of modernism.

From the very beginning of our trip, we were surrounded by an aura of mystery. Firstly, we did know much about this place (certain was the fact that tickets were hard to get because we went there in the group, and the entrance to the English guide is only once a day and it's still in the group up to 15 people. The house was built in 1930 and looks like it was built like two years ago - nothing more). Secondly, we really wanted to know what is waiting for us there.

History / Historia

As we mentioned at the beginning, the villa was built in 1930, so it is a building from the interwar period. The owner of the luxury home was a Jewish family that spend a lot of money to build this house. The cost was very high due to the unusual construction method, luxurious materials, and the use of modern technology for heating and ventilation. Unfortunately, because of its origin, the family could not have live long in his mansion. Fearing the Nazis, Tugendhat family left Czechoslovakia in 1938 and did never return.

After leaving Czechoslovakia by family Tugendhat villa was confiscated by the Gestapo in 1939 and used as an apartment and office; its interior was modified and many pieces disappeared. It suffered considerable damage during combat at the end of World War II and later when it served as quarters and stables for the Soviet military. It was partially repaired and used for various purposes (for example as a children's physiotherapy center) for several decades after World War II. On 26 August 1992, Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar, the political leaders of Czechoslovakia, met there to sign the document that divided the country into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Since 1994, the villa has been open to the public as a museum administered by the city of Brno.

Obecnie budynek należy do skarbu państwa.

An interesting fact is also that the dramatic history of the villa, and above all its inhabitants inspired writer Simon Mawer to write a highly acclaimed book "The Glass Room". As it was found out later the daughter of the former owners of villa Tugendhat Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat says that she and the whole family disapproves of the book:"For me, it is another theft. First, the Nazis took our house and now Mawer took our story. That novel isn't about our family, it is against our family. It makes me terribly angry." She also adds that despite Mawer claims that the book is not about the family Tugendhat, things will get mixed up and at the end everybody will believe that this is the true story of the house and the family:"Why did he invent such a Mickey Mouse-family where he tells incredible lies about my father? Can you imagine somebody writing a book about your parents full of lies? Without ever contacting anybody from the family? (...) It is not a good book. The only reason it got famous is because he wrote about the villa Tugendhat. For me, they are parasites that want to get their glory out of the house."

Construction / Konstrukcja

When we arrived at the place, Villa inconspicuous from the outside looked rather impressive. But it turned out that it consists of three floors, so is not so small like it looks from outside. At the top were a terrace, main hall, and rooms of the family. Spouses have separate bedrooms with social devices. There were also two children's bedrooms and room for a nanny.

The first level of the house consists of the main living and social areas with the conservatory and the terrace, and the kitchen and servants' rooms. In the living room, you can find symbolically divided by curtains, wooden semicircular wall, an elegant wall of onyx, which changed color when exposed to the incident at a certain angle sunlight. It is this part of the most accounted in our taste. Great, proven and well-lit room did indeed impressive. Interiors were equipped with elegant furniture, designed with great sensitivity and style. The furniture was also designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and are manufactured to this day.

Właśnie ta część najbardziej przypadła nam do gustu. Wielki, okazały i bardzo dobrze oświetlony pokój robił naprawdę wielkie wrażenie. Wnętrza wyposażone były w eleganckie meble, zaprojektowane z dużym wyczuciem i stylem.

On the ground floor, there was a technical part of the building (the engine room for air technology, the boiler room, the engine room for power retracting of the windows, the laundry room, the dark room, the storage place for fur coats) and proved garden. At Villa is located also  the adjacent flat which was used by the building engineer and as a garage for two cars.

Summary / Podsumowanie

Unfortunately, because of the fact that taking pictures was possible only for a fee, on the blog we present few photos of Villa from the terrace and the garden. We hope you learned something new and interesting from this note. For those who stay close to Brno, we recommend you to visiting Villa Tugendhat. You will be able to see how in 1930 the man was able to construct an imposing mechanism in the building and so much more.
